"Still the biggest free dating site - but outdated and overwhelming"

The Good: Completely free; fast and easy sign-up; one of the largest userbase with tens of millions of active users
The Bad: Not enough details in many profiles due to easy sign-up; outdated site design and interface; matching tools aren’t the most advanced; intrusive advertising; no screening on member quality; many scammers because of the free access
The Bottom Line: Plenty of Fish is one of the most famous sites for free online dating, and it has the largest userbase. However, we recommend other sites such as OKCupid, PerfectMatch or EHarmony for their far better interface, matching tools and member screening. You can still try Plenty of Fish if you are ready to put up with an outdate website to get access to a very large userbase.

Detailed Review

Member Quality & Choice:

Plenty Of Fish is one of the most famous and successul online dating sites. For basic use, it is entirely free and features the largest userbase of all free sites. You’ll find members of all ages and backgrounds, and even small cities will have many members. Plenty of Fish really impresses with its reach.

But the site also suffers from its wide openess. On average, profiles tend to be rather short, compared to main competitor OkCupid. The problem is, the website does not probe its users too much on sign-up, and it does not force new users to fill their profile. The result is that many people answer in very short sentences, or many times not at all.

Unfortunately, this means that a lot of profile are mostly empty and it can be quite hard to get a feel for a person prior to messaging him or her. The same is true for pictures, many profiles having only one photo or even none at all.

To sum it up, the fact that sign-up is free, fast and easy does not attract the brightest or most motivated audience. Plenty of Fish is also notorious for having quite a large amount of scammers, ie people with fake profile, making up all sorts of creative stories to scam you, although they are making an effort to cut this down.

Matching / Searching:

At all times, you can see the number of people online in the top menu bar. Plenty of Fish makes it easy to browse for users in your city by clicking the “my city” tab. However, you don’t get many search criteria to refine your search, and since the site has so many users, it can quickly get overwhelming.

The little “matching” there is on Plenty of Fish relies mostly on personality and chemistry tests, but the matching works poorly. Plenty of Fish users seem to have understood that, and most users aren’t using the tools. It’s a site where users who mostly rely on browsing profiles freely by area.

Ease of Use:

Plenty of Fish is relatively easy to use if you just want to browse profile of people living in your location. However, anything beyond that can get a bit confusing. The interface is very busy and cluttered (including many ads). Frankly, it looks and feels like it’s stuck in the 90s.

For example, many of the pictures are poorly displayed and squeezed or smashed on users profile. On occasion quizzes and surveys will return an error when you click “Submit”. It is surprising, for a website so big, to find so many design mistakes and sloppy errors.

Plenty of Fish still can boast a very large and active userbase, but it’s been resting on its laurels for too long. There are many better free or paid sites (see our review of eHarmony and Match) with better matching tools, more attractive users and a better-designed interface, all of which save you time and can make the difference between succeeding in your dating search or not.

"waste of time"

On Plenty of fish, you are on your own, so to speak. The matching etc is a joke, the only way is to browse profiles endlessly for days on end. And not many people reply to the messages. A waste of time. Oh and did I mention the scammers???

"Free site = full of scammers"

The problem with Plenty of Fish is it's a free site + it's the biggest one, so it's the first site scammers choose to go prey on people. You have to be very careful there because people will tell you anything to try and get to your money (or worse!) that's my experience and that of my best friend. Avoid pof and go for the bigger, serious sites like eharmony or Perfect Match. Almost no scammers there and at least you talk to real people.
